      Bipolar Disorder

These teenagers switch between two different emotional "poles", hence the name, bipolar.

There are many different kinds of bipolar disorder.  What they all have in common are drastic swings in mood.  These swings could be between a:

      • depressed mood and an irritable mood or manic mood (feeling unrealistically good with unusual energy)
      • normal mood and a manic mood or irritable mood.

Teenagers could spend several weeks feeling one way before changing to another.  In some cases teenagers can cycle rapidly between the poles spending less than a week experiencing each pole. In teenagers the manic moods seem to be more of the irritable type than the unrealisticly good feeling type.
